State Agency & Regulatory Framework
West Virginia has no magnet fishing-specific statute. The New River Gorge National Park designation (granted in 2020) affects access to portions of the New River previously open to magnet fishing — NPS rules now apply to those areas. WVDNR Wildlife Management Areas and USACE Huntington District recreation areas provide alternative access. West Virginia's coal and industrial history means some waterways have significant non-natural bottom debris; be prepared for finds ranging from mining equipment to industrial artifacts.

West Virginia State Parks (WVDNR Division of State Parks) has not prohibited magnet fishing. Contact specific parks for site rules.
Waterway Access & Navigability
West Virginia's major navigable waterways include the Ohio River (western border), Kanawha, New River, and Potomac Rivers. The New River Gorge — now a National Park and managed by NPS — prohibits magnet fishing under NPS regulations. Non-NPS portions of the New River have different access rules.
