State Agency & Regulatory Framework
Rhode Island's small size and primarily coastal waterway system create a different access context than inland states. The state's strong maritime history means underwater archaeological resources are actively managed. Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission oversees the state's underwater archaeological resources. Finds in coastal or tidal areas may implicate both state antiquity laws and the Abandoned Shipwreck Act.
