State Agency & Regulatory Framework
Massachusetts DCR's broad resource protection rules have effectively prohibited magnet fishing in most state-managed park and recreation areas. Access on public waterways outside DCR jurisdiction — MassWildlife WMAs, municipal boat launches, and private land with permission — may be possible. Massachusetts Archaeology Month (October) and the state's active archaeology community reflect the significant historical resources present in Massachusetts waterways. The Massachusetts Antiquities Act (G.L. c. 9, §§ 26-27C) protects archaeological resources on state land.
State Park Policy
Massachusetts DCR has applied its prohibition on digging and removing natural or cultural resources (302 CMR 12.00) to magnet fishing in most park contexts. The prohibition applies to DCR-managed water access areas as well as parks proper. Some MassWildlife Wildlife Management Areas may have different rules — contact the specific WMA.
Waterway Access & Navigability
Massachusetts' navigable waterways include the Connecticut River (flowing south through the Pioneer Valley), Merrimack, Charles, and numerous coastal rivers. Public access to these waterways exists through state boat ramps and fishing access areas managed by MassWildlife.

Items 100+ years old recovered from public land in Massachusetts may be protected under the Archaeological Resources Protection Act (federal) and Massachusetts state antiquity law. Contact your State Historic Preservation Office before disturbing or retaining any potentially historical find.
